Much of the theory on the adaptive cycle is based on Ecology. In that respect the following books are very valuable. Though they are based on Ecology also the impact of this approach on other natural and social systems (like organizations) are discussed exhaustively.

The books are:

Gunderson, L. H., & Holling, C. S. (2002). Panarchy : understanding transformations in human and natural systems. Washington, DC: Island Press.
Walker, B., & Salt, D. (2006). Resilience thinking: Sustaining Ecosystems and People in a Changing World: Island Press.

One of our students Tomas Kolka, read both books and came up with some questions that he thinks are important to better understand the Panarchy book.
