Organization, change and innovation

Today’s business world is characterized by global competition, high complexity and uncertainty, as well as rapid change. The resulting dynamics in the environment lead to diverging requirements for organizations. On the one hand, organizations need to be able to manage the present in order to maximize profits and satisfy the short-term interests of shareholders. One the other hand, they need to be flexible, innovative and able to adapt quickly to unforeseen circumstances. Both of them will lead to uncertainty, which occurs in increasingly more rapid succession, and disturbs equilibriums more quickly and more radically. This is a very complex balancing act but given the fact that organizations can no longer just assume that current successes will be sustainable in the future, this two-sidedness demonstrates a chance of continuity. Consequently, it is argued that organizations go through a succession of phases over time. Each phase includes a different assessment of reality, culture, management style, and actions connected to these. In this regard, we refer to a theoretical model called the “adaptive cycle of resilience” (ACoR).

Intellectual capital and knowledge are the paramount assets in today’s society, but poorly utilized neither in universities, nor in practise. The performance of research students is considered purely a proof of competence and discarded upon completion, since the same research is often performed multiple times. The Adaptive Cycle initiative attempts to solve this problem by providing a wiki, maintained and expanded by students. This form of collaborative learning allows the Adaptive Cycle to become a knowledge hub, providing an overview of ‘best-in-class’ literature that students can use for future research efforts, and it has the potential to evolve into a knowledge base on business-IT subjects for both students and organizations and their professionals.

As part of our research project we focus on blind spots of managers in the process of organization change. An important reason for this research is the fact that it becomes more and more clear that organizations can no longer assume that current successes will be sustainable in the future. We also do research on cultural differences in this respect. One of our main partners in our research is the European Research Institute Hungary.

The project and education

Providing a wiki of scientific knowledge base of universities, maintained and expanded by students, forms and facilitates collaborative learning; allows the better utilization of research capacity of universities. This initiative is a spin off of work done at the University of Amsterdam. Realizing that using a wiki as a knowledge management system (KMS) for collaboration and interaction several advantages were apparent:

  • It enables the generation of knowledge and allows students to correct and extend each other’s work.
  • Participation in a wiki trains students to process and structure large amounts of information.
  • A wiki facilitates collaboration, allowing students to combine their knowledge and coalesce their activities.
  • Wikis support the development of knowledge management skills, because it requires students to construct, modify and correct information.
  • A wiki containing only prime information on certain subjects facilitates a student’s literature research process.

Invitation to participate in the development of the wiki

We are looking for partner universities, who agree with our initiation of collecting leading scientific literature on a variety of business/IT subjects (as main topics related to the adaptive cycle of resilience) and facilitating knowledge sharing, has the potential to become an authoritative hub for both universities and organizations. Through its collaborative nature, the wiki also provides a starting point for future literature research. Time that was previously spent on continuously performing the same literature review, can now be invested in providing actual contributions through new scientific research.
