Abstract: This mini case study describes how Whatsapp is developing along the path of the adaptive cycle. Whatsapp is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. There are 600 million users today and it is unthinkable that someone with a smartphone doesn't have this application on it. This mini-case focuses on what factors are important with the success of Whatsapp and how it is related to the phases of the adaptive cycle. The case will describe how Whatsapp made a rapid start at the 'new combinations' phase to end up very quick via the 'entrepeneurship' phase in the 'equilibrium' phase. After this description there are also some brief recommendations to avoid the feared 'crisis' phase of the Adaptive Cycle.
