Article Evaluation -- Peter Bouwdewijn 17:30, 29 May 2012 (CEST)

A very interesting article. This article encapsulates a lot of the essence of what i have been trying to tell in my other two evaluations about environmental change From Crisis Prone to Crisis Prepared: A Framework for Crisis Management and Crisis as change strategy in public organizations. Also does this reflect some of the ideas that are shown in the group work of Group 6.

I really like the emphasis of this article. It shows what is happening in some business environments these days. The changes in business environments are going faster, are more numerous, are more radical and are becoming more and more complex. This has impact on existing businesses operating in these environments. Business operating from a planning school perspective were able to relatively close to predicts what would come in the future, and were able to determine their course in advance. With an environment becoming increasingly complex the future becomes impossible to predict without a correct understanding of the environment, an understanding that can hardly be understood due to the constant changes. The adaptive approach described in this research is basically a way of going back to the core. Observing and sensing the environment that we are operating in, and determining our actions based upon environment variables.

However although it would be great if we could sense our way to do business through information we receive from our environment. In my opinion it is still extremely difficult to determine what variables are initiators of change in the environments. Also do we have to deal with increasing amount of information that we cant investigate purely manually, technology can be a great enabler of adaptive strategies, since it can help us analyze more information. However systems are created by humans, so the sense-making process will still have be build in to them which requires constant adaptation together with new strategies.

I think this is a really interesting article that shows the flaws in traditional planning strategy in a turbulent environent that give us the false impression we can predict the future of the market we operate in. Instead the market should be what forms our strategy by sensing what is going on in the market around us. It is important to get in touch with the environment through all the information that is available out there and technology could definitely help in realizing that. Thank you for sharing this article.
