The critical factors affecting the development of innovative technologies: A case study at Tata Steel IJmuiden

Inthispaper,itisinvestigatedwhichcriticalfactorsaﬀectthedevelopmentandimplementation of innovative technologies. Literature research was conductedandacasestudywasperformedonthesteel manufacturing organization Tata Steel. The Adaptive Cycle of Resilience and the Cyneﬁn framework were used to asses in which quadrant of these models the organization currently resides. Interviews with Tata Steel employees were conducted and research was done on data provided by the organization. The results of the literature combined with the interviews illustrated that Tata Steel IJmuiden was on the right-hand side of the Adaptive Cycle model. The position is between Crisis and New Combinations. This situation of Tata Steel, according to the Cyneﬁn framework, is Complicated. The appropriate actions according to this framework are ‘Sense’, ‘Analyze’ and ‘Respond’.
